Association of Chelmsford A Cappella
The ACA was formed to help develop a cappella growth through the rest of the Chelmsford school system and the community at large.
Our primary goal is to assist financially and operationally to prepare for a cappella competitions held in late winter and early spring. This can come in the form of registration fees, travel expenses and other expenses incurred by the groups.
Welcome to the Association of Chelmsford A Cappella (ACA)!
We are a 501c3 organization dedicated to supporting Chelmsford’s a cappella community.
Currently, Chelmsford has two a cappella groups in Chelmsford High School that are supported by ACA. One is a co-ed group, The Thursdays. The second is an all-treble group, The Crescendos.
Our unpaid volunteer board consists of parents of current and former members of the two groups and others from the community who are dedicated to advancing a cappella in Chelmsford.
The main competition on the high school level for a cappella is the International Championship of High School A Cappella, or ICHSA for short (think Pitch Perfect!). This competition, which is run by Varsity Vocals is a three month long contest that covers North America and beyond. Beginning in February, the competition features regional quarterfinal and semifinal rounds and culminates in a final round of competition. Previously held in New York City, the finals provide the top 10 teams an opportunity to compete to become the ICHSA champion.

Both of our groups have experienced success in the ICHSA competition over the years. These competitions provide the vocalists with an opportunity to see first-hand the skill level needed to maintain a professional edge, and a knowledge base that simply is invaluable. However, this experience comes at an expense. One group making it through to the finals can cost over $7,500.
We have some great ideas for building a cappella within our community. It is our goal to make Chelmsford a hotspot for a cappella within the Merrimack Valley and beyond.
